Your neck has a very important job, to support your head. When you experience neck pain, whether by injury, poor posture or repetitive movement, it is important that you seek medical attention. Our doctors see many patients in his Chicago Chiropractic office who need to be treated for neck pain and would love to see you to discuss your individual issues.

To understand the cause of neck pain, you must first understand how your body works. The neck, or cervical spine, is composed primarily of seven vertebral bones. These Vertebra protect the spinal cord and help maintain the upright posture. Between the vertebra are vertebral discs, which provide space between the vertebrae for the nerves to pass through, cushion the bones, and allow for movement. Exiting on each side of these discs are spinal nerves, which can feed into all parts of the body. The nerves from the neck feed into the head, shoulders, arms, and upper back. Surrounding these nerves, vertebra and discs, are ligaments, tendons and muscles (also known as soft tissue). These soft tissues help to provide support to the spine, and carry out specific movements, based on signals from the nerves. As long as the tissues of the cervical spine are healthy and aligned, the cervical spine can operate properly.

With an injury, poor posture, or repetitive movements, the vertebra, and soft tissue around them can move out of alignment. When this happens, your muscles, and nerves can become pinched, or irritated. It can result neck stiffness, achiness or pain; but, since it affects the nerves, it can affect other areas of the body that the nerve travels. If the lower part of your neck is affected, you can develop issues with, shoulder or arm pain, numbness, tingling or weakness. If it the upper part of the neck is affected, you can develop issues with headaches, dizziness, loss of balance, sinus problems, and increased stress levels. Neck problems have also even been linked to high blood pressure in adults, and chronic ear infections in young children.

At Back Works Chiropractic, we pride ourselves on providing excellent treatment for individuals with neck problems, and we get great results. If you have had neck symptoms, we urge you to not to put off getting the problem taken care of. The symptoms may can and go. But if the problem isn’t taken care of, it will just get worse. Permanent issues such as arthritis, chronic pain, and loss of function can result if the problem isn’t taken care of. And each time the pain comes back, it will be a little worse, and last a little longer, until it is permanent. If you live in the Chicago area, and are having issues with your neck, call today for a free consultation.
