What is Chiropractic in Medicine?
Chiropractic Medicine is the practice of restoring alignment and motion to the body’s structure (primarily the spine) to allow for natural, pain free healing without the use of drugs or surgery. This is accomplished through the use of chiropractic manipulation, physiotherapy, exercise and rehab, and nutrition. The goal of chiropractic is to get rid of pain, but to correct the source of the problem and promote health and wellness of the human body. Aligning the bones and soft tissues structures in or around the spine can take pressure off the nervous system, allowing the organs and soft tissue structures of the body to function properly.

Is Chiropractic Safe?
Chiropractic treatments are incredibly safe—actually, they’re one of the safest kinds of medical care available. As your Chicago chiropractor, we have studied extensively to fully understand the body’s systems. The chiropractic training program is comparable to the program of study for medical doctors. According to the American Chiropractic Association, more than 30 million people visited doctors of chiropractic last year for a variety of conditions, and more and more medical doctors are referring their patients to doctors of chiropractic.

Do Chiropractic Treatments Hurt?
Absolutely not. A properly delivered Chiropractic adjustment should not elicit pain. Chiropractic adjustments are generally gentle and pain free. Chiropractic adjustments are, in fact, very effective at relieving pain, and at restoring movement and function to the joint.

What are the benefits of Chiropractic Care?
There are many benefits to chiropractic care. The most obvious benefit from chiropractic care is to reduce pain and improve function. Chiropractics are used to treat lower back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, elbow pain, hip pain, sciatica, and loss of motion or joint stiffness. Aside from reducing pain and improving function, it has also been used to help increase energy levels, reduce stress, strengthen your immune system, improve the function the organs of the body, reduce headaches, and decrease incidence of ear infections in children. Recently, a study performed at Northwestern showed that Cervical (Neck ) adjustments can help lower blood pressure. The benefits of chiropractic seem to be limitless, and are still being explored today.

What is that popping noise?
That popping noise, also called a cavitation, is the sound that a joint makes when gases that have built up in the joint are dispersed. Although this often accompanies a manual Chiropractic adjustment, it is not the goal of the adjustment. The goal of the Chiropractic adjustment is to produce a specific movement of the joint. There are many chiropractic techniques our chiropractors can use to treat a patient that do not produce a popping sound. To find out more about these chiropractic techniques, call today.

How do I know if I am a candidate for Chiropractic care?
Although, the only way to know for sure is to schedule an appointment with a chiropractic physician, there are some tell tale signs that suggest you could use a chiropractic adjustment. The most obvious sign is that you have pain or stiffness in or around the joint. Some other signs that you need an adjustment could be more systemic symptoms such as headaches, sinus problems, loss of energy, arm or leg pain or numbness, loss of balance, loss of overall health, and weakened immune system. Poor posture, and clothes that don’t fit properly are also a sign that you may need a chiropractic treatment. Pay particular attention to this with children as they can develop musculoskeletal symptoms such as scoliosis before or during puberty. If you think you may need Chiropractic services, call us today for a free consultation for you or your child.

How long do I have to keep coming?
The choice is always up to you. Generally, based on your examination, the doctor will come up with a specific treatment plan designed to get you out of pain, and to correct the problem. The length of the plan generally depends on how bad the problem is, how long you have had the problem for, how old you are, and the overall health of your body. Once the problem is corrected, many people will continue with care to promote wellness and reduce the chances of the problem returning, while others will come back to the office only if the pain returns.

How long does a treatment last?
A typical treatment will last anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the condition. The first visit will generally take about 45 minutes, as the doctor needs to take a thorough history and perform a full in depth exam.

How much does it cost?
Most insurances will fully cover Chiropractic Treatments. Additionally, if you’ve been in a car accident or a personal injury, the car insurance or general liability insurance will cover the treatments. Work injuries will also cover the full cost of the treatment. If you do not have insurance, we have very reasonable cash rates. An office visit will typically be about $40 to $50. If you are not sure if your insurance covers chiropractic, we would be glad to call the insurance company for you.

I heard that having your back popped can cause arthritis. Is that true?
No. Actually, studies have shown the opposite to be true. Restoring motion and alignment can help reduce the odds of a joint from degenerating and developing into arthritis. If you already have arthritis, it can help stop the progression of the disease. For more information on arthritis and how chiropractic can help, call our offices at (312) 265-3355.
